About Spatial Statistics

Spatial statistics concerns the analysis of data that are collected in space, These data are special, as each observation has a coordinate tied to it. These coordinates can be selected up front, e.g. for weather stations or olive trees, they can occur at random, e.g. for weeds and earthquakes and they can be set by administrative boundaries. The observations themselves are either given for the moment, e.g. temperature and disease incidence or are presence or absence, e.g. road accidents. Spatial statistics naturally extends towards statistics for processes in space and time.
