About Alfstats

Alfstats was founded in 2025 by Prof. dr. ir. Alfred Stein, who is an emeritus professor in Spatial Statistics and Image Analysis at the University of Twente. He has an MSc in mathematics and information science, with a specialization in applied statistics from Eindhoven University of Technology and a PhD from Wageningen University. He has worked for many years on soil science and geology studies. In 2002 he became professor at the new department of Earth Observation Science at ITC, which he chaired for 12 years. From 2008 until 2020 he has been a member of the faculty board alternating with the portfolios of research and education.

His research has focused on statistical aspects of spatial and spatio-temporal – monitoring – data. Focus points are optimal sampling, image analysis, spatial statistics, use of prior information, spatial data quality, fuzzy techniques and random sets, also in a Bayesian setting. Applications have been in health studies (covid, rodents), air quality (PM2.5), agriculture, the environment, geology, ecology, urban areas, archeology, glaciers and in polar sea-ice. In image analysis Prof. Stein has studied satellite images of various types and resolutions.

From 1998 onwards he has supervised more than 60 PhD candidates on a range of spatial (and spatio-temporal) statistical and image analysis topics. Since 2011 he is the editor-in-chief of Spatial Statistics, the leading scientific journal in the domain of spatial statistics. Prof. Stein has a wide experience in scientific publishing with national and international scientists. He has a global network with contacts at all continents.
